The world’s second largest economy, China is reportedly home to one million millionaires and over 100 billionaires. However, though the ranks of China’s super-rich are growing at an even faster rate than the nation’s GDP, since 2003, 72 Chinese millionaires have died young or from unnatural causes, including 15 who were murdered for their wealth. Other premature deaths included 17 suicides and seven “accidents”.

BeijingThe numbers of millionaires may be rising steeply in China, but their life span appears to be shorter than average Chinese, as 72 of them died young in the last eight years.
The Chinese multimillionaires, whose personal assets exceeded 100 million yuan, have died of unnatural causes or passed away at a young age since 2003. Fifteen were murdered for their wealth, 17 committed suicides, seven died in accidents, 14 were executed and 19 others died at an early age due to illness, reported the New Culture View newspaper.
The average age of those who died from illness was only 48, with cardiovascular ailments and cancer the biggest killers.
Wang Junyao, chairman of Junyao Group, died of cancer at the age of 38 in November 2004. Long-time anxiety, high pressure and excessive social activities all contributed to their sickness, the report said.
“Chinese people live on average more than 70 years. The millionaires obviously died earlier than average,” said Ding Chunsheng, director of the health education centre in Changchun, capital city of Jilin Province.
Most of the suicides in this group were attributed to business failures. Fifteen millionaires were murdered for their wealth by either a friend, partner or competitor. Fourteen millionaires, who accumulated their fortunes via illegal means, were executed.
According to the Hurun Rich List, 55,000 people on the Chinese mainland had assets of more than 100 million yuan in 2009. China already has the second highest number of billionaires.

Unnatural deaths claimed the lives of 72 Chinese billionaires since 2003, the Changchun-based New Culture News reported Friday. 据《新文化报》报道,自2003年以来,中国共有72位亿万富翁死于非命。
The report, based on a survey of public records, said of the 72 billionaires, 15 were murdered, 17 committed suicide, seven died in accidents, 14 received death sentences and 19 died from disease. 报道中的数据显示,在这72名亿万富翁中,15名死于他杀、17名死于自杀、7名死于意外、14名被执行死刑、19名富豪积疾早逝。
Cardiovascular disease was the top killer among those who succumbed to illness, followed by cancer. 在因疾病早逝的19人中,患心脑血管病的人最多,其次是癌症。
Counts of China's billionaires vary, with many rich Chinese hiding their wealth to avoid investigation. Hurun estimated the number of Chinese with known assets of more than 10 billion yuan (US$1.5 billion) reached 97 this year, indicating a high mortality rate for China’s business elite. 为了免于被调查,中国的很多亿万富翁藏匿其财富。胡润富豪榜指出,2011年,中国有阳光财富超过百亿的富豪97人。
