Phật Giáo, một "Tôn Giáo Hòa Bình?" (Cập nhật 4-11-2014)

Tôi, Nguyên Khả Phạm Thanh Chương là tác giả bài viết Vài Suy Nghĩ về "Kinh Thánh" và Tôn Giáo , bài viết đã gây một cuộc "đôi co kém cỏi", đây chính là điển hình của căn bệnh tôn giáo u tối tác hại. Nó cũng chính là đại ý mục tiêu của bài viết nêu trên.

Khi một người thánh hóa niềm tin tôn giáo của họ được nhân lên với niềm tin "tổ cò giống dòi", họ không còn khả năng trao đổi. Sản phẩm tinh chất của hai "tôn giáo" này hợp lại  là tính  bất  nhân và kém cỏi truy tìm kiến thức. Họ lọc lựa, cắt xén "câu nói" của "người  viết" họ cho là đối thủ, họ sàng lọc bằng chứng, thiếu truy cứu chứng sử trong ngụy biện và ... la toáng lên những nhận định có bằng chứng ngược với tín lý của họ, vượt tầm hiểu biết kiến văn của họ là...bất lương!!!

Với loại người và não trạng "thánh hóa" niềm tin tối dạ như vậy, Tôi không có nhu cầu đôi co, nhưng có nhu cầu dẫn giải vấn đề rõ ràng hơn, với chứng cớ, để quí độc giả  khắp nơi, nếu chưa biết, có cái mốc cơ hội tìm hiểu thêm. Tôi vẫn tin vào TRÌNH ĐỘ ĐỌC cũng như NHÂN CÁCH của những độc giả có nhu cầu truy tìm kiến thức chân chính.

Mục đích của bài viết nhỏ này chỉ là như vậy! Chú ý, chữ "gã đầu trọc" tôi dùng trong bài mang cả hai nghĩa, trong đó có hàm ý giống như người ta khi xưa gọi Bồ Đề Đạt Ma là "tên cướp râu xồm".

Trong bài viết Vài Suy Nghĩ về "Kinh Thánh" và Tôn Giáo, Tôi chủ yếu dùng trường hợp Thiên Chúa Giáo, Do Thái Giáo, Hồi Giáo và bộ sách được gọi là Cựu Ước (Old Testament) để minh giải nhận định của Tôi, cũng như lý giải hiện trạng chính trị thế giới. Và khi đề cập, dù thoáng qua thôi, đến Phật giáo, Tôi cũng viết rõ:

Ngay như Phật Học, khi đã thành tôn giáo, Phật Giáo hàng ngàn năm qua cũng nhập chính, gian manh thủ đoạn lừa bịp dân chúng, gây tranh chấp đau khổ chia rẽ con người.

Dù chỉ là "thoáng qua" có một giòng nhận định rành mạch như thế, nhưng nó đã động cái NỌC NGU và sự tối dạ đầy SÂN, SI và NGÃ MẠN của một vài tín đồ "phật giáo"- và nó trở thành ... trùng trùng duyên khởi... tạo ra cái "nghiệp" tranh luận "hung hăng" chưa biết dứt được lúc nào! ( (lạ một điều, lẽ ra vì bài viết nghiêng nặng "xỉa xói" về  "Kinh Thánh" nhưng chưa thấy "kitô hữu" nào nhảy đỏng, thì đã thấy vài "phật tử" gào thét!!! Xét sự kiện này thì có vẻ "ki tô hữu" ôn hòa, hiểu biết, biết chấp nhận sự thật bằng chúng hơn "phật tử" chăng?!?)

Cũng như tất cả các thuyết giáo khác, đều được tùy nghi diễn giải theo trình độ nhận thức và hiểu biết. Phật học hay triết lý Phật, và khi trở thành "tôn giáo- Phật giáo", cũng không là ngoại lệ.

Thái tử Tất Tạt Đa, đã không đi tìm hay sáng tạo ra tôn giáo, ông đi tìm giải đáp cho vấn nạn kiếp người (sinh lão bệnh tử), và, theo ông, ông cho rằng đã tìm ra được giải pháp. Ông đi giảng giải pháp này như một HỆ THỐNG TRIẾT HỌC, có thể nói thêm là KHOA HỌC THẦN KINH  (Neuroscience) và PHÂN TÂM HỌC (psychology), tùy nghiên cứu và cách nhìn, nhưng chắc chắn Tất Tạt Đa không đặt và giảng giải những khám phá của ông như là "tôn giáo". Những buổi giảng giải của ông là những cuộc thảo luận về triết học, nhân sinh và giải pháp -không phải tuyên phán tín lý thần quyền. Cho nên PHẬT HỌC không phải "phật giáo", không có ý niệm thượng đế (concept of God) chúa Trời (độc thần) hay ngay cả đa thần như Ấn Giáo mà chính Tất tạt Đa đã từng thử nghiệm rồi loại bỏ.

Nhưng sau khi Tất Tạt Đa chết, tất cả giảng giải mang nhiều tính khoa học - vô thần này- trở thành tôn giáo với nhiều hệ phái, Tất Tạt Đa, Phật, Buddha, người thức tỉnh, giác ngộ, đã trở thành một vị Thần với tâm linh thần quyền, và cảnh giới niết bàn (Nirvana) đã được biến thành "thiên đàng cõi trên, cõi sau khi chết".

Phật Học, sau khi biến thành Phật Giáo, cùng chung số phận với các tôn giáo khác, qua thời gian, qua từng xứ sở địa phương, nó được hiểu và diễn giải khác nhau... Và NHẬP CHÍNH, tức là tham gia hành xử tổ chức trong tương tranh chính trị thế quyền. Nó cũng hành xử thủ đoạn gian trá, bất nhân để đạt quyền và lợi. Giới  tăng lữ lãnh đạo cũng đặt ra chức sắc, thang bậc, thẩm quyền... Và ở một số nơi, thời điểm, đã diễn giải "phật giáo" xiển dương bạo động, giết người cho những chủ trương chính trị, quyền lợi thế tục, đặc biệt tại xứ Phù Tang.

Và cũng từ đây, cái nguyên khởi khoa học, tính không, vô thần, bất bạo động của PHẬT HỌC, khi đã thành PHẬT GIÁO, đã và đang bị chất vấn. Những tác phẩm nghiên cứu, kẻ bênh người chống khá nhiều. Quan điểm ý kiến vẫn là quan điểm ý kiến, nhưng bằng chứng không thể bác bỏ là PHẬT GIÁO (đại thừa và tiểu thừa- hiện nay đổi cách gọi là Bắc phái và Nam tông) đã và đang nhập chính, bạo động, gây căm thù đố kỵ, xung đột. Dưới đây là một vài thông tin và tác phẩm nghiên cứu để quí độc giả tham khảo:

Riêng tại Việt Nam, khởi đầu thời "vàng son" của PHẬT GIÁO là cuộc nhập chính với mưu thoán vương quyền của hai anh em sư sãi người gốc Tầu, Lý Khánh Vân (Vạn Hạnh) và Ngô Chân Lưu (Khuông Việt) đặt Lý Công Uẩn (con tư sinh hoặc con nuôi, tùy độc giả muốn tin nguồn "sử" nào) vào triều đình nhà tiền Lê, rồi xếp đặt chiếm vương quyền khi Lê Long Đĩnh "qua đời" - (Giai đoạn sử này còn nhiều nghi vấn tranh luận- Hay nói thẳng toàn bộ "chính sử" khắp mọi nơi cần phải được xét lại theo tinh thần khoa học như người ta đang tiến hành tại Mỹ). Riêng Việt Nam, quí độc giả nên tìm đọc tập nghiên cứu "Việt Nam Quốc Sử Đính Ngoa" và những nghiên cứu chất vấn những phi lý nghi án cung đình trong lịch sử Việt nam, làm bước khởi đầu của tiến trình chất vấn.

Trong thời quốc gia PHẬT GIÁO Đại Việt với các "quốc sư" này, đã xâm lược tiến chiếm gọi là "bình Chiêm" vùng đất Quảng Trị ngày nay!

Qua đến đời PHẬT GIÁO CỰC THỊNH nhà TRẦN với việc TRU DIỆT TẬN RỄ GIÒNG HỌ LÝ. Ta cứ giả thiết những ghi chép "chính sử" này đúng thật, thì phải chăng đúng là NHÂN QUẢ?

Nhà "PHẬT TRẦN" này là triều đại loạn luân công khai "hợp pháp" của lịch sử "đậu phọng đỏ" !

Các ông "thánh sư, thiền sư" nhà Trần tầm cỡ "tổ Trúc Lâm" như Điều Ngự Giác Hoàng, không những cứ lờ việc loạn luân trong gia đình mình, mà leo lên Yên Tử chẳng phải chỉ để "tu dưỡng thiền" không thôi, còn để "góp ý bày mưu chính trị" cho hoàng tộc, kể cả việc mưu mô gả bán lừa đảo công chúa Trần Huyền Trân "mở mang" lảnh thổ Ô, Rí gạt vua Chiêm.

Những ai theo chủ nghĩa "tổ cò, giống dòi" xin cứ gân cổ biện minh "quyền lợi quốc gia dân tộc" xí xóa những thủ đoạn chính trị bất nhân vô đạo này. Nhưng đừng quên ta đang BÀN về PHẬT GIÁO NHẬP CHÍNH, không phải đơn thuần lãnh vực KẾ SÁCH CHÍNH TRỊ tương tranh quốc gia man rợ!

Đế quốc Mông Cổ, hay nhà Nguyên, là đế quốc Phật Giáo, theo giòng giáo thuyết mật tông Tây Tạng (Vajrayāna.) trong thời cực thịnh của nó. Hốt Tất Liệt và Oa Khoát Đài là "phật tử". Bên cạnh Đại Đế trong cung đình, nội các, luôn có quốc sư và tăng lữ phụ trì cố vấn.  Tiến chiếm khắp nơi, gồm cả hai "Phật quốc" Việt- Nhật! Buddhism in Mongolia- Dân Mông Cổ đại đa số cải theo "quốc giáo Phật" này cho đến khi đế quốc này suy vong, họ mới quay về với tín ngưỡng thần linh của họ (Shamanism).

Triết Học Phật, khi biến dạng thành một tôn giáo, nó không thoát khỏi số phận như bao nhiêu tôn giáo khác, bị chia nhiều nhánh tùy nghi diễn giải và niềm tin. Các học giả thường chỉ chia làm hai nhánh chính THERAVADA- MAHAYANA (xưa hay gọi là Tiểu thừa Đại thừa, nay thường phân biệt là Nam Tông và Bắc Phái). Nhưng thật ra cái triết thuyết trở thành "giáo thuyết" này, nó biến đổi đa dạng hơn thế nhiều.

Không kể MẬT TÔNG Tây Tạng "huyền bí" (có mấy giáo phái khác nhau, trong đó Vajrayāna Buddhism có nhiều ảnh hưởng "tà" ra ngoài)- Một biến dạng "ưng ý" nhất và cũng "rắc rối" nhất cho các tín đồ cũng như học giả là THIỀN TÔNG. Thiền lại chia nhiều phái ngõ khác nhau, tùy các "xứ sở tổ cò khác nhau", nhưng theo phái này thường là giới có tiền có chữ- gọi là trung lưu dư giả..Như tại "tổ cò đậu phọng đỏ An Nam" ta -có Trúc Lâm đi từ bậc vua chúa triều Trần.. xuống đến kẻ sĩ Ngô Thì Nhậm... và hiện nay lác đác vài ông dật sĩ dư giờ nào đó!

Tổ của nhánh Phật Giáo nổi danh này là Bồ Đề Đạt Ma từng chỉ trích tính phi phật trong "cái lối cạo đầu nhai kinh" (The Zen Teaching of Bodhidharma) của các "sư sãi", kể cả Ananda, kẻ đứng đầu trong 10 đệ tử cao nhất của Tất Đạt Đa:

"Trong số 10 môn đệ xuất sắc nhất của Thích Ca Mâu Ni, Ananda học cao nhất. Nhưng ông ta chẳng ngộ Phật. Tất cả ông ta làm là học và thuộc lòng. Những vị A La Hán chẳng nhận thức Phật. Tất cả cái họ biết là thực tập nhận thức, và họ bị vướng trong vòng nhân quả. Như thế là một nhân nghiệp: không thoát vòng sinh tử. Khi hành xử ngược lại với điều họ chủ định, những kẻ như vậy báng bổ Phật. (Among Shakyamuni’s ten greatest disciples, Ananda was foremost in learning. But he didn’t know the Buddha. All he did was study and memorize. Arhats don’t know the Buddha. All they know are so many practices for realization, and they become trapped by cause and effect. Such is a mortal’s karma: no escape from birth and death. By doing the opposite of what he intended, such people blaspheme the Buddha. 

"Những ai kiến tâm họ là phật chẳng cần cạo đầu. Người thường dân cũng là những vị phật. Trừ khi họ thấy được bản nhiên của họ, những kẻ cạo đầu chỉ đơn thuần là những kẻ cuồng tín"("People who see that their minds are the buddha don’t need to shave their heads. Laymen are buddhas too. Unless they see their nature, people who shave their heads are simply fanatics.

Và rằng:

"Những kẻ như thế báng bổ Phật. Giết họ không có tội. Kinh sách nói rằng, "Khi những kẻ mê lầm không còn khả năng tín thức, giết họ chẳng sao, trong khi những ai khác tín thức đạt đến cảnh giới Phật" (Such people blaspheme the Buddha. Killing them would not be wrong. The sutras say, "Since icchantikas are incapable of belief, killing them would be blameless, whereas people who believe reach the state of Buddhahood." (Bồ Đề Đạt Ma)

Dĩ nhiên, đây chỉ là một trong nhiều hướng diễn giải khác nhau của "phật giáo".

Một diễn giải khác của Phật giáo tại Nhật vào thế kỷ 15, trong các cuộc cạnh tranh quyền lực giũa các "giáo hội phật giáo" bản xứ cũng như với các thế lực đương thời, diễn giảng rằng:

"Lòng từ bi của Phật cũng phải được báo đáp ngay cả bằng hành xử chém nát thịt da (kẻ thù) ra từng mảnh. Bổn phận của một tín hữu đối với Thầy (tăng lữ) cũng phải được báo đáp ngay cả bằng hành xử đập nát xương (kẻ thù) ra từng mảnh (The mercy of Buddha should be recompensed even by pounding flesh to pieces. One's obligation to the Teacher should be recompensed even by smashing bones to bits!" Religion in Japanese History by Joseph M. Kitagawa, pgs 116-117


Trong thời chiến tranh Nga-Nhật và hai thế chiến, nhiều tu viện- giáo hội Phật Giáo Nhật bản đã diễn giải Phật pháp đăng tải những hô hào cổ võ chiến tranh chém giết, kể cả vì "tổ quốc giống nòi". Trong đó có nạn nhân Việt Nam. Đến nỗi sau thế chiến 1945, đã phải chính thức xin lỗi!  (Zen at War (2nd ed.) by Brian Daizen Victoria, Rowman and Littlefield 2006). 

Chưa kể gần đây, giáo phái Phật giáo của "thầy bàn tọa" Aum Shinrikyo, đã rao giảng từ "tín lý" kinh Phật theo diễn giải của phái  Bardo và phowa  Phật giáo Mật Tông-Tây tạng (Vajrayāna Buddhism) rằng: "giết những kẻ kém tiến bộ tâm linh và rằng giết một người đang thụ nghiệp xấu trong kiếp này là cứu họ cho kiếp sau, cho nên giúp họ tiến hơn đến sự cứu rỗi" (Buddhist rationalizations of taking the lives of "less spiritually advanced" beings, and that killing a person in danger of accumulating bad karma in this life was to save them in the next life, thereby advancing them toward salvation) Thế là nhà Bạch Thầy phật tử này ra lệnh xả hơi độc tại nhà tầu điện ngầm Tokyo!!!

Nghe na ná như  lập luận "công án máu" Bloodstream Sermon cùa Bồ Đề Đạt Ma trích dẫn ở trên!!!

Thế kỷ thứ 9, năm 841, xứ hoạt phật xảy ra nội chiến trong đó các Sư đóng góp bằng cách chém giết lẩn nhau giữa các phái và vương quyền Tây tạng bấy giờ. (NHẬP CHÍNH !!!) ( Buddhist Traditions and Violence by Michael Jerryson, Oxford University Press 2013, p.55)

Hiện nay, đầu thế kỷ 21, tại Thái Lan, một vương quốc Phật giáo đầy đủ trò bịp quần chúng của giới tăng lữ, từ việc ban phép "nhà thổ" cho đến rao truyền mê tín dị đoan hưởng lộc- làm xã hội lạc hậu. Nó còn chộn lẫn với niềm tin chính trị quốc gia như gã "trọc đầu" Phra Kittiwuttho người Thái, giảng rằng giết những tên cộng sản chẳng phạm gì giới luật nhà phật hết!!! (Buddhist Fury: Religion and Violence in Southern Thailand by Michael Jerryson/ Oxford University Press) Ngụy ngục nghe sướng rên người, chắc tràn qua Thái xin làm phật tử hết.

Hoàng gia quân đội Thái còn "quân sự hóa" các chùa chiền phục vụ vương quyền quốc gia dân tộc! (nhập chính) Tất tạt Đa có sống dậy, cũng bỏ chạy lên Everest!

Miến Điện, một xứ Phật thứ hai hàng xóm Thái Lan, cũng đã đem phật pháp tiến về quốc gia dân tộc với hẳn một đoàn quân phật tử dân chủ  Democratic Karen Buddhist Army do một "ông đầu trọc" chính qui lãnh đạo, thầy U Thuzana!!!

Tại Sri Lanka (Tích Lan), cũng một xứ Phật khác trong khu vực, đang diển ra chém giết giữa nhóm Phật giáo và Hồi giáo, tấn công giết người đốt chùa, đốt đền thờ của nhau!

- Tại Bhutan, vương quốc phật giáo, sát gần Nepal, nơi Thích Ca Mâu Ni ra đời, đã và vẫn tiến hành trục xuất những công dân không phải "phật tử" ra khỏi vương quốc này trong mục tiêu giữ vững tính "thuần chủng phật giáo" của quốc gia giống nòi!!! Những nơi ấy, thời điểm ấy, tôn giáo Phật giáo đã và đang dạy người ta SAI TRÁI, BẤT NHÂN!

Và ngay toàn bộ các giáo hội Phật giáo vẫn chưa có chỗ BÌNH ĐẲNG CHO PHỤ NỮ, ngay cả CƠ HỘI lên NIẾT BÀN. Trong một số kinh điển nhất định như Amida Buddhism’ có luật nguyện Phật đặt ra để chuyển hoán các bà, các cô trở thành đàn ông rồi mới cho phép các bà, các cô có cơ hội vào cõi Phật hoặc thành Phật!!! Vấn đề thiếu sót, kỳ thị phái tính cổ hủ này nghiêm trọng, khiến có một bà "đậu phọng đỏ", gốc nam kỳ lục tỉnh, bỗng dưng "giác ngộ" tự nhảy lên phá ngang "thang bậc" trở  thành Vô Thượng Sư!  Đó là bà đẹp gái Thanh Hải, ăn mặc đủ mọi quần áo, thay đổi đủ kiểu tóc rồi đi phán phép tùm lum! Không biết "vô thượng sư" hay là ma vương "Ba tuần", sáu tháng gì đây!!!

Ngay Đa Lai Lạt Ma cũng phải biện giải sùi bọt mép vấn đề nhân quyền coi thường "giống cái" tại hội nghị "Vai Trò Nữ Tu Trong Phật Giáo" Hamburg năm 2007 rằng:

"Đôi khi trong tôn giáo có sự nhấn mạnh vai trò quan trọng của "giống đực."(dịch đàn ông, phái nam.. nghe không hay!NK). Trong Phật Giáo, tuy nhiên, bậc tu nguyện cao nhất, gọi là "thượng tọa  trống" và "thượng tọa mái" (bhikshu và  bhikshuni) (thượng tọa và ni sư!) được bình đẳng và bình quyền. Điều này đúng, cho dù trong vài lãnh vực nghi lễ, vì phong tục xã hội, thượng tọa đứng trước. Nhưng Phật đã ấn định những quyền căn bản một cách bình đẳng cho cả hai nhóm tăng lữ. Không có sự cần thiết phải thảo luận là có nên tái lập thụ phong chức Ni Sư hay không. Vấn đề chỉ là làm sao thực hiện cho trọn vẹn trong giáo luật Vinaya mà thôi)
(Mẹ khỉ! danh xưng phẩm trật ràng buộc rắc rối! tất cả là KHÔNG- đạo khả đạo phi thường đạo- danh khả danh phi thường danh-NK ghi chú- không phải Lat Ma nói câu này!!! )

Sometimes in religion there has been an emphasis on male importance. In Buddhism, however, the highest vows, namely the bhikshu and bhikshuni ones, are equal and entail the same rights. This is the case despite the fact that in some ritual areas, due to social custom, bhikshus go first. But Buddha gave the basic rights equally to both sangha groups. There is no point in discussing whether or not to revive the bhikshuni ordination; the question is merely how to do so properly within the context of the Vinaya. Đấy là lý do, chứng cớ đưa Tôi đến nhận định:

 "Ngay như Phật Học, khi đã thành tôn giáo, Phật Giáo hàng ngàn năm qua cũng nhập chính, gian manh thủ đoạn lừa bịp dân chúng, gây tranh chấp đau khổ chia rẽ con người."

 Và trước đó, Tôi cũng khẳng định:

Đây không chỉ là nguyên nhân tôn giáo, mà còn là nguyên nhân ở con người chính trị, định chế chính trị. Nhưng tôn giáo là chất xúc tác đẩy mạnh tội ác trong những trường hợp này.

Tôi không nắm hết các "ngài đầu trọc" trên thế giới. Nhưng theo định nghĩa căn bản, có lẽ Dalai Lama, vị hoạt Phật 14 này, được coi là giáo vị cao nhất và tiếng nói uy tín chính thức nhất của Phật giáo hiện hành nói chung, được nhiều người biết đến trên thế giới. Tôi nhắc đến Ông bởi vì nếu có nhiều người có thái độ hành xử và cách tư duy của Ông, thì may ra, may ra Phật Học, một triết thuyết nhân sinh khoa học mới được cứu khỏi khổ nạn cái nghiệp "tôn giáo" hiện nay đang thụ vào nó -và nó đang tạo ra khổ nghiệp cho nhân loại.

Trong quyển sách tự sự, tự vấn mới đây " Vũ Trụ trong chỉ một Nguyên Tử: Tín Ngưỡng và Lý Trí", Ông viết:

"Nếu các lý giải khoa học một cách đúc kết đã chứng minh một số tuyên bố nhất định của Phật Học là SAI, thì chúng ta phải chấp nhận những khám phá của khoa học và từ bỏ những tuyên bố đó"

Và chính Ông, một lãnh đạo tôn giáo, cũng từng khẳng định:

“Chúng ta có thể sống mà không cần tôn giáo và tĩnh tâm, nhưng chúng ta không thể tồn tại mà không có sự chăm sóc yêu thương của con người"- (We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection- Dalai Lama thứ 14-(1935)

Chữ BI của nhà Phật đúng nghĩa, quả thật lớn!

Dĩ nhiên Ông cũng vẫn là một giáo sĩ lãnh đạo của Phật giáo, một "thánh nhân" (Holly man- His Holliness) hiểu theo cách nhìn của đại đa số sùng bái vớ vỉn. Có nghĩa là Ông vẫn phải giữ "niềm tin" của quần chúng vào "tâm linh". It's been a brutal season in the culture wars with both the White House and a prominent Catholic cardinal speaking out in favor of creationist superstition, while public schools and even natural history museums shy away from teaching evolutionary science. When I picked up the Dalai Lama's new book, "The Universe in a Single Atom: The Convergence of Science and Spirituality," I feared that His Holiness, the leader of Tibetan Buddhism, was adding to the confusion between reason and faith.

It was his subtitle that bothered me. Spirituality is about the ineffable and unprovable, science about the physical world of demonstrable fact. Faced with two such contradictory enterprises, divergence would be a better goal. The last thing anyone needs is another attempt to contort biology to fit a particular religion or to use cosmology to prove the existence of God.
But this book offers something wiser: a compassionate and clearheaded account by a religious leader who not only respects science but, for the most part, embraces it. "If scientific analysis were conclusively to demonstrate certain claims in Buddhism to be false, then we must accept the findings of science and abandon those claims," he writes. No one who wants to understand the world "can ignore the basic insights of theories as key as evolution, relativity and quantum mechanics."
That is an extraordinary concession compared with the Christian apologias that dominate conferences devoted to reconciling science and religion. The "dialogues" implicitly begin with nonnegotiables - "Given that Jesus died on the cross and was bodily resurrected into heaven. . ." - then seek scientific justification for what is already assumed to be true.
The story of how someone so open-minded became the Tibetan Buddhist equivalent of the pope reads like a fairy tale. When the 13th Dalai Lama died in 1933 he was facing northeast, so a spiritual search team was sent in that direction to find his reincarnation. The quest narrowed further when a lama had a vision pointing to a certain house with unusual gutters. Inside a boy called out to the visitors, who showed him some toys and relics that would have belonged to him in his previous life. "It is mine!" he exclaimed, like any acquisitive 2-year-old, and so his reign began.
Once installed in Lhasa, the new Dalai Lama happened upon another of his forerunner's possessions, a collapsible brass telescope. When he focused it one evening on what Tibetans call "the rabbit on the moon," he saw that it consisted of shadows cast by craters. Although he knew nothing yet about astronomy, he inferred that the moon, like the earth, must be lighted by the sun. He had experienced the thrill of discovery.
Before long he was dismantling and repairing clocks and watches and tinkering with car engines and an old movie projector. As he grew older and traveled the world, he was as keen to meet with scientists and philosophers - David Bohm, Carl von Weizsäcker, Karl Popper - as with religious and political leaders. More recently his "Mind and Life" conferences have brought physicists, cosmologists, biologists and psychologists to Dharamsala, India, where he now lives in exile from the Chinese occupation of Tibet. He and his guests discuss things like the neuroscientific basis of Buddhist meditation and the similarities between Eastern concepts like the "philosophy of emptiness" and modern field theory. In "The Universe in a Single Atom" he tells how he walked the mountains around his home trying to persuade hermits to contribute to scientific understanding by meditating with electrodes on their heads.
But when it comes to questions about life and its origins, this would-be man of science begins to waver. Though he professes to accept evolutionary theory, he recoils at one of its most basic tenets: that the mutations that provide the raw material for natural selection occur at random. Look deeply enough, he suggests, and the randomness will turn out to be complexity in disguise - "hidden causality," the Buddha's smile. There you have it, Eastern religion's version of intelligent design. He also opposes physical explanations for consciousness, invoking instead the existence of some kind of irreducible mind stuff, an idea rejected long ago by mainstream science. Some members of the Society for Neuroscience are understandably uneasy that he has been invited to give a lecture at their annual meeting this November. In a petition, they protested that his topic, the science of meditation, is known for "hyperbolic claims, limited research and compromised scientific rigor."
There may be a political subtext to the controversy. According to an article in Nature, many of the petitioners are Chinese. But however mixed their motivation, they make a basic philosophical point. All religion is rooted in a belief in the supernatural. Inviting a holy man to address a scientific conference may be leaving the back door ajar for ghosts.

Shinran and the 35th Vow

According to the ceremonial rulebooks for priests, the above wasan (type of Japanese verse) is supposed to be chanted at the funerals for women, but there was considerable objection to the practice in Japan and most temples in America tend to chant a more standard wasan at funerals regardless of the deceased’s gender. But the above wasan is important in revealing how Shinran felt about women who were very much alive.
In the Chinese version of the Immeasurable Life Sutra (also known as the Larger Sukhavativyuha Sutra), there are 48 vows made by the seeker Dharmakara to his teacher Lokesvararaja. The most essential of these is the 18th vow, known as Hongan (main-vow), where Dharmakara proclaims that his enlightenment cannot be complete unless he can be called by the Name "Namu Amida Butsu" (meaning, the one who bows down, namu, to all beings, Amida, as enlightened, Butsu).
In the same spirit of Hongan's reverent view of all beings as existing in the state of enlightenment (Pure Land), the other vows deal with overcoming specific forms of discrimination which prevent us from seeing certain people as Pure Land residents. For example, vow #3 deals with racism ("all skin colors will be seen as glowing like precious gold") and vow #38 deals with dress codes ("all garments will be considered acceptable for Buddhas to wear no matter how torn, discolored or dirty").
Although the 35th vow represents Dharmakara’s overcoming of his sexist view, in Japanese Buddhist history, the text of the vow has been interpreted as a rationale for discrimination against women. One widely accepted translation reads:

"If...women of the [Buddha-worlds] who, having heard my Name, rejoice in faith, awaken aspiration for Enlightenment, and wish to renounce womanhood* should be reborn again as women**, may I not attain perfect Enlightenment."

In the above interpretation, life as a woman is a terrible state of existence that must be renounced and avoided in future rebirths in order to attain enlightenment. You can see how this became a justification for Buddhist sects to limit the role of women in the temples. Yet at the same time, the men in control assured women that their contributions of money and labor to the temples were not in vain since they still had a future chance of salvation. With this attitude directed at them, women felt unworthy of enlightenment because of their female bodies. It was sad to read in one book about Japanese Buddhism that the writer overheard one female temple member say to another while hard at work at a benefit function, "I really hate being a woman, don't you?"
During my studies in Japan, I found there is a different way of interpreting the 35th vow. One of my professors at Otani University, Akira Hataya, said the use of the word nyonin in Chinese translations of Buddhist texts, though normally read as a compound noun "female-person" (i.e., woman), could also be read as an adjective and noun memeshii hito, "effeminate (weak, wimpy) person," referring to either a man or a woman. From this, I came to feel that Buddhist texts are not trying to exclude women from the path to enlightenment, but rather the Teachings admonish both sexes not to fall into the negative traits stereotyped as "feminine" - that is, being cowardly, manipulative, or parasitic on others. There are plenty of passages in the sutras which encourage both sexes to emulate the positive aspects of femininity - to be nurturing, compassionate and sensitive towards others.
From ancient times to the present, women much more than men have been relegated to the role of "sex object," existing only to be pleasing to men's sight and other senses. The woman who seeks enlightenment, however, must break free of the mad pursuit to live up to that stereotype, and see that she is not just an object for others' pleasure. In other words, in the enlightened world, the Pure Land, women will be seen and see themselves as human beings equal to men, not as inferior objects. See how different the 35th vow sounds when we put in an objectifying term such as "bimbo."

"May I attain the highest enlightenment only when women who hear my Name realize how demeaning it is to be seen as a bimbo and in their new life of seeking the Dharma, their joy and faith will keep them from ever wanting to be seen as a bimbo again."
Shinran in his day did not have the benefit of such a progressive interpretation, but he came to a similar conclusion through his own experience of the Nembutsu. Shinran did not question the prevailing belief that women were too defiled to be enlightened. However, to think that a woman's body would be more corrupt than a man's did not matter much when Shinran already felt that the human body itself was irredeemably corrupt - full of desires and angers which cannot be quieted for more than a few moments at a time. He questioned the claims that there were actual people who totally conquered their bodily functions and manifested the so-called "marks of the Buddha" (such as special swirls on the feet and the retraction of private parts).
According to Shinran, complete enlightenment cannot be attained as long as we exist as biological creatures, yet once we awaken to the truth that our individual lives are embraced by Infinite Life (Amida), it means complete enlightenment will definitely occur. Shinran often uses the phrase, "equal to Maitreya," meaning that despite our defiled bodies, we are on the brink of enlightenment like the prototype Maitreya, the "Buddha-to-be." To Shinran, since each "Buddha-to-be" will inevitably arrive at the Pure Land like Maitreya, they can start enjoying the benefits of enlightenment here and now, rather than waiting for the distant future.
This absorption of a future inevitability into the present moment also characterizes Shinran's attitude towards women. In the above wasan, Shinran praises Amida's power to change a being in a separate category labeled "women" to a someone in the same "Buddha-to-be" category of all men. Since Shinran believes this will definitely occur, he can consider all women as "Buddhas-to-be" equal to any man. The power of the all-encompassing Infinite Life breaks down what the people of Shinran's time saw as women's biological obstacle on the spiritual path.
I believe that due to cultural conditioning, some women may require different approaches to religion than most men, just like some Americans need to approach Buddhism differently than most Japanese. But whatever your gender, race, economic status, etc., the 48 vows in the Immeasurable Life Sutra point out that there is no discrimination against anyone on the path to spiritual truth. If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, be assured that the Buddha's words won't support them.

George Herbert Walker Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924. During the next year the family moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, and established their permanent residency.
Prescott and Dorothy Walker Bush had had a son, Prescott, Jr., before George. Later there was a little sister, Nancy, and another brother, Jonathan; a fourth son, William (`` Bucky ''), was born 14 years after George, in 1939.
George was named after his grandfather, George Herbert Walker. Since George's mother called Grandfather Walker `` Pop, '' she began calling her son, his namesake, `` little Pop, '' or `` Poppy. '' Hence, Poppy Bush is the name the President's family friends have called him since his youth.
Prescott, Sr. joined W.A. Harriman & Co. May 1, 1926. With his family's lucrative totalitarian projects, George Bush's childhood began in comfort and advanced dramatically to luxury and elegance.
The Bushes had a large, dark-shingled house with `` broad verandas and a portecochere '' (originally a roofed structure extending out to the driveway to protect the gentry who arrived in coaches) on Grove Lane in the Deer Park section of Greenwich.@s1
Here they were attended by four servants--three maids (one of whom cooked) and a chauffeur.
The U.S.A. was plunged into the Great Depression beginning with the 1929-31 financial collapse. But George Bush and his family were totally insulated from this crisis. Before and after the crash, their lives were a frolic, sealed off from the concerns of the population at large.
During the summers, the Bushes stayed in a second home on the family's ten-acre spread at Walker's Point at Kennebunkport, Maine. Flush from the Soviet oil deals and the Thyssen-Nazi Party arrangements, Grandfather Walker had built a house there for Prescott and Dorothy. They and other well-to-do summer colonists used Kennebunkport's River Club for tennis and yachting. In the winter season, they took the train to Grandfather Walker's plantation, called `` Duncannon, '' near Barnwell, South Carolina. The novices were instructed in skeet shooting, then went out on horseback, following the hounds in pursuit of quail and dove. George's sister Nancy recalled `` the care taken '' by the servants `` over the slightest things, like the trimmed edges of the grapefruit. We were waited on by the most wonderful black servants who would come into the bedrooms early in the morning and light those crackling pine-wood fires.... ''@s2
The money poured in from the Hamburg-Amerika steamship line, its workforce crisply regulated by the Nazi Labor Front. The family took yet another house at Aiken, South Carolina. There the Bush children had socially acceptable `` tennis and riding partners. Aiken was a Southern capital of polo in those days, a winter resort of considerable distinction and serenity that attracted many Northerners, especially the equestrian oriented. The Bush children naturally rode there, too.... ''@s3 Averell Harriman, a world-class polo player, also frequented Aiken.
Poppy Bush's father and mother anxiously promoted the family's distinguished lineage, and its growing importance in the world. Prescott Bush claimed that he `` could trace his family's roots back to England's King Henry III, making George a thirteenth cousin, twice removed of Queen Elizabeth. ''@s4
This particular conceit may be a bad omen for President Bush. The cowardly, acid-tongued Henry III was defeated by France's Louis IX (Saint Louis) in Henry's grab for power over France and much of Europe. Henry's own barons at length revolted against his blundering arrogance, and his power was curbed.
As the 1930s economic crisis deepened, Americans experienced unprecedented hardship and fear. The Bush children were taught that those who suffered these problems had no one to blame but themselves.
A hack writer, hired to puff President Bush's `` heroic military background, '' wrote these lines from material supplied by the White House:

`` Prescott Bush was a thrifty man.... He had no sympathy for the nouveau riches who flaunted their wealth--they were without class, he said. As a sage and strictly honest businessman, he had often turned failing companies around, making them profitable again, and he had scorn for people who went bankrupt because they mismanaged their money. Prescott's lessons were absorbed by young George.... ''@s5

When he reached the age of five, George Bush joined his older brother Pres in attending the Greenwich Country Day School. The brothers' `` lives were charted from birth. Their father had determined that his sons would be ... educated and trained to be members of America's elite.... Greenwich Country Day School [was] an exclusive all-male academy for youngsters slated for private secondary schools....
``Alec, the family chauffeur, drove the two boys to school every morning after dropping Prescott, Sr. at the railroad station for the morning commute to Manhattan. The Depression was nowhere in evidence as the boys glided in the family's black Oldsmobile past the stone fences, stables, and swimming pools of one of the wealthiest communities in America. ''@s6
But though the young George Bush had no concerns about his material existence, one must not overlook the important, private anxiety gnawing at him from the direction of his mother.
The President's wife, Barbara, has put most succinctly the question of Dorothy Bush and her effect on George: `` His mother was the most competitive living human. ''@s7
If we look here in his mother's shadow, we may find something beyond the routine medical explanations for President Bush's `` driven '' states of rage, or hyperactivity.
Mother Bush was the best athlete in the family, the fastest runner. She was hard. She expected others to be hard. They must win, but they must always appear not to care about winning.
This is put politely, delicately, in a `` biography '' written by an admiring friend of the President: `` She was with them day after day, ... often curbing their egos as only a marine drill instructor can. Once when ... George lost a tennis match, he explained to her that he had been off his game that morning. She retorted, `You don't have a game.' ''@s8
According to this account, Barbara was fascinated by her mother-in-law's continuing ferocity:

George, playing mixed doubles with Barbara on the Kennebunkport court, ran into a porch and injured his right shoulder blade. `` His mother said it was my ball to hit, and it happened because I didn't run for it. She was probably right, '' Barbara told [an interviewer].... When a discussion of someone's game came up, as Barbara described it, `` if Mrs. Bush would say, `She had some good shots,' it meant she stank. That's just the way she got the message across. When one of the grandchildren brought this girl home, everybody said, `We think he's going to marry her,' and she said, `Oh, no, she won't play net.' ''@s9

A goad to rapid motion became embedded in his personality. It is observable throughout George Bush's life.
A companion trait was Poppy's uncanny urge, his master obsession with the need to `` kiss up, '' to propitiate those who might in any way advance his interests. A life of such efforts could at some point reach a climax of released rage, where the triumphant one may finally say, `` Now it is only I who must be feared. ''
This dangerous cycle began very early, a response to his mother's prodding and intimidation; it intensified as George became more able to calculate his advantage.
His mother says:

`` George was a most unselfish child. When he was only a little more than two years old ... we bought him one of those pedal cars you climb into and work with your feet.

``[His brother] Pres knew just how to work it, and George came running over and grabbed the wheel and told Pres he should `have half,' meaning half of his new possession. `Have half, have half,' he kept repeating, and for a while around the house we called him `Have half.' ''@s1@s0 George `` learned to ask for no more than what was due him. Although not the school's leading student, his report card was always good, and his mother was particularly pleased that he was always graded `excellent' in one category she thought of great importance: `Claims no more than his fair share of time and attention.' This consistent ranking led to a little family joke--George always did best in `Claims no more.'

Andover

George Bush left Greenwich Country Day School in 1936. He joined his older brother at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, 20 miles north of Boston. `` Poppy '' was 12 years old, handsome and rich. Though the U.S. economy took a savage turn for the worse the following year, George's father was piling up a fortune, arranging bond swindles for the Nazis with John Foster Dulles.
Only about one in 14 U.S. secondary school students could afford to be in private schools during George Bush's stay at Andover (1936-42). The New England preparatory or `` prep '' schools were the most exclusive. Their students were almost all rich white boys, many of them Episcopalians. And Andover was, in certain strange ways, the most exclusive of them all.
A 1980 campaign biography prepared by Bush's own staff concedes that `` it was to New England that they returned to be educated at select schools that produce leaders with a patrician or aristocratic stamp--adjectives, incidentally, which cause a collective wince among the Bushes.... At the close of the 1930s ... these schools ... brought the famous `old-boy networks' to the peak of their power. ''@s1@s2
These American institutions have been consciously modeled on England's elite private schools (confusingly called `` public '' schools because they were open to all English boys with sufficient money). The philosophy inculcated into the son of a British Lord Admiral or South African police chief, was to be imbibed by sons of the American republic.
George made some decisive moral choices about himself in these first years away from home. The institution which guided these choices, and helped shape the peculiar obsessions of the 41st President, was a pit of Anglophile aristocratic racialism when George Bush came on the scene.
`` Andover was ... less dedicated to `elitism' than some [schools].... There were even a couple of blacks in the classes, tokens of course, but this at a time when a black student at almost any other Northeastern prep school would have been unthinkable. ''@s1@s3
Andover had a vaunted `` tradition, '' intermingled with the proud bloodlines of its students and alumni, that was supposed to reach back to the school's founding in 1778. But a closer examination reveals this `` tradition '' to be a fraud. It is part of a larger, highly significant historical fallacy perpetrated by the Anglo-Americans--and curiously stressed by Bush's agents in foreign countries.
Thomas Cochran, a partner of the J.P. Morgan banking firm, donated considerable sums to construct swanky new Andover buildings in the 1920s. Among these were George Washington Hall and Paul Revere Hall, named for leaders of the American Revolution against the British Empire. These and similar `` patriotic '' trappings, with the alumni's old school-affiliated genealogies, might seem to indicate an unbroken line of racial imperialists like Cochran and his circle, reaching back to the heroes of the Revolution!
Let us briefly tour Andover's history, and then ponder whether General Washington would want to be identified with Poppy Bush's school.
Thirty years after Samuel Phillips founded the Academy at Andover, Massachusetts, the quiet little school became embroiled in a violent controversy. On one side were certain diehard pro-British families, known as Boston Brahmins, who had prospered in the ship transportation of rum and black slaves. They had regained power in Boston since their allies had lost the 1775-83 American Revolution.
In 1805 these cynical, neo-pagan, `` Tory '' families succeeded in placing their representative in the Hollis chair of Philosophy at Harvard College. The Tories, parading publicly as liberal religionists called Unitarians, were opposed by American nationalists led by the geographer-historian Rev. Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826). The nationalists rallied the Christian churches of the northeastern states behind a plan to establish, at Andover, a new religious institution which would counter the British spies, atheists and criminals who had taken over Harvard.
British Empire political operatives Stephen Higginson, Jr. and John Lowell, Jr. published counterattacks against Rev. Morse, claiming he was trying to rouse the lower classes of citizens to hatred against the wealthy merchant families. Then the Tories played the `` conservative '' card. Ultra-orthodox Calvinists, actually business partners to the Harvard liberals, threatened to set up their own religious institution in Tory-dominated Newburyport. Their assertion, that Morse was not conservative enough, split the resources of the region's Christians, until the Morse group reluctantly brought the Newburyport ultras as partners into the management of the Andover Theological Seminary in 1808.
The new theological seminary and the adjacent boys' academy were now governed together under a common board of trustees (balanced between the Morse nationalists and the Newburyport anti-nationalists, the opposing wings of the old Federalist Party).
Jedidiah Morse made Andover the headquarters of a rather heroic, anti-racist, Christian missionary movement, bringing literacy, printing presses, medicine and technological education to Southeast Asia and American Indians, notably the Georgia Cherokees. This activist Andover doctrine of racial equality and American Revolutionary spirit was despised and feared by British opium pushers in East Asia and by Boston's blue-blooded Anglophiles. Andover missionaries were eventually jailed in Georgia; their too-modern Cherokee allies were murdered and driven into exile by pro-slavery mobs.
When Jedidiah Morse's generation died out, the Andover missionary movement was crushed by New England's elite families--who were then Britain's partners in the booming opium traffic. Andover was still formally Christian after 1840; Boston's cynical Brahmins used Andover's orthodox Protestant board to prosecute various of their opponents as `` heretics. ''
Neo-paganism and occult movements bloomed after the Civil War with Darwin's new materialist doctrines. In the 1870s the death-worshipping Skull and Bones Society sent its alumni members back from Yale University, to organize aristocratic secret satanic societies for the teenagers at the Andover prep school. But these cults did not yet quite flourish. National power was still precariously balanced between the imperial Anglo-American financiers, and the old-line nationalists who built America's railroads, steel and electrical industries.
The New Age aristocrats proclaimed their victory under Theodore Roosevelt's presidency (1901-09). The Andover Theological Seminary wound up its affairs and moved out of town, to be merged with the Harvard Divinity School! Andover prep school was now largely free of the annoyance of religion, or any connection whatsoever with the American spirit. Secret societies for the school's children, modeled on the barbarian orders at Yale, were now established in permanent, incorporated headquarters buildings just off campus at Andover. Official school advisers were assigned to each secret society, who participated in their cruel and literally insane rituals.
When J.P. Morgan partner Thomas Cochran built Andover's luxurious modern campus for boys like Poppy Bush, the usurpers of America's name had cause to celebrate. Under their supervision, fascism was rising in Europe. The new campus library was named for Oliver Wendell Holmes, Andover class of 1825. This dreadful poet of the `` leisure class, '' a tower of Boston blue-blooded conceit, was famous as the father of the twentieth century U.S. Supreme Court justice. His son, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., symbolized the arbitrary rule of the racial purity advocates, the usurpers, over American society.
Andover installed a new headmaster in 1933. Claude Moore Fuess (rhymes with fleece) replaced veteran headmaster Alfred E. Stearns, whom the Brahmins saw as a dyed-in-the-wool reactionary. Stearns was forced out over a `` scandal '': a widower, he had married his housekeeper, who was beneath his social class.
The new headmaster was considered forward-looking and flexible, ready to meet the challenges of the world political crisis: for example, Fuess favored psychiatry for the boys, something Stearns wouldn't tolerate.
Claude Fuess had been an Andover history teacher since 1908, and gained fame as an historian. He was one of the most skillful liars of the modern age.
Fuess had married into the Boston Cushing family. He had written the family-authorized whitewash biography of his wife's relative, Caleb Cushing, a pro-slavery politician of the middle nineteenth century. The outlandish, widely known corruption of Cushing's career was matched by Fuess's bold, outrageous coverup.@s1@s4
During George Bush's years at Andover, Feuss, his headmaster, wrote an authorized biography of Calvin Coolidge, the late U.S. President. This work was celebrated in jest as a champion specimen of unwholesome flattery. In other books, also about the blue bloods, Fuess was simply given the family papers and designated the chief liar for the `` Bostonian Race. ''
Both the Cushing and Coolidge families had made their fortunes in opium trafficking. Bush's headmaster named his son John Cushing Fuess, perhaps after the fabled nineteenth-century dope kingpin who had made the Cushings rich. @s1@s5
Headmaster Fuess used to say to his staff, `` I came to power with Hitler and Mussolini. ''@s1@s6 This was not merely a pleasantry, referring to his appointment the year Hitler took over Germany.
In his 1939 memoirs, Headmaster Fuess expressed the philosophy which must guide the education of the well-born young gentlemen under his care:

Our declining birth rate ... may perhaps indicate a step towards national deterioration. Among the so-called upper and leisure classes, noticeably among the university group, the present birth rate is strikingly low. Among the Slavonic and Latin immigrants, on the other hand, it is relatively high. We seem thus to be letting the best blood thin out and disappear; while at the same time our humanitarian efforts for the preservation of the less fit, those who for some reason are crippled and incapacitated, are being greatly stimulated. The effect on the race will not become apparent for some generations and certainly cannot now be accurately predicted; but the phenomenon must be mentioned if you are to have a true picture of what is going on in the United States.@s1@s7

Would George Bush adopt this anti-Christian outlook as his own? One can never know for sure how a young person will respond to the doctrines of his elders, no matter how cleverly presented. There is a much higher degree of certainty that he will conform to criminal expectations, however, if the student is brought to practice cruelty against other youngsters, and to degrade himself in order to get ahead. At Andover, this was where the Secret Societies came in.

The Secret Societies

Nothing like Andover's secret societies existed at any other American school. What were they all about?
Bush's friend Fitzhugh Greene wrote in 1989:

Robert L. `` Tim '' Ireland, Bush's longtime supporter [and Brown Brothers Harriman partner], who later served on the Andover board of trustees with him, said he believed [Bush] had been in AUV. `` What's that? I asked. ``Can't tell you, '' laughed Ireland. `` It's secret! '' Both at Andover and Yale, such groups only bring in a small percentage of the total enrollment in any class. `` That's a bit cruel to those who don't make AU[V] or `Bones,' '' conceded Ireland.@s1@s8

 

A retired teacher, who was an adviser to one of the groups, cautiously disclosed in his bicentennial history of Andover, some aspects of the secret societies. The reader should keep in mind that this account was published by the school, to celebrate itself:

A charming account of the early days of K.O.A, the oldest of the Societies, was prepared by Jack [i.e. Claude Moore] Fuess, a member of the organization, on the occasion of their Fiftieth Anniversary. The Society was founded in ... 1874....

[A] major concern of the membership was the initiation ceremony. In K.O.A. the ceremony involved visiting one of the local cemeteries at midnight, various kinds of tortures, running the gauntlet--though the novice was apparently punched rather than paddled, being baptized in a water tank, being hoisted in the air by a pulley, and finally being placed in a coffin, where he was cross-examined by the members.... K.O.A. was able to hold the loyalty of its members over the years to become a powerful institution at Phillips Academy and to erect a handsome pillared Society house on School Street. The second Society of the seven that would survive until 1950 was A.U.V. [George Bush's group]. The letters stood for Auctoritas, Unitas, Veritas. [Authority, Unity, Truth.] This organization resulted from a merger of two ... earlier Societies ... in 1877. A new constitution was drawn up ... providing for four chief officers--Imperator [commander], Vice Imperator [vice-commander], Scriptor [secretary], and Quaestor [magistrate or inquisitor]....
Like K.O.A, A.U.V. had an elaborate initiation ceremony. Once a pledge had been approved by the Faculty, he was given a letter with a list of rules he was to follow. He was to be in the cemetery every night from 12:30 to 5:00, deliver a morning paper to each member of the Society each morning, must not comb or brush his hair nor wash his face or hands, smoke nothing but a clay pipe with Lucky Strike tobacco, and not speak to any student except members of A.U.V.
After the pledge had memorized these rules, his letter of instruction was burned. The pledge had now become a `` scut '' and was compelled to learn many mottoes and incantations. On Friday night of initiation week the scut was taken to Hartigan's drugstore downtown and given a `` scut sundae, '' which consisted of pepper, ice cream, oysters, and raw liver. Later that night he reported to the South Church cemetery, where he had to wait for two hours for the members to arrive. There followed the usual horseplay--the scut was used as a tackling dummy, threats were made to lock him in a tomb, and various other ceremonies observed. On Saturday afternoon the scut was taken on a long walk around town, being forced to stop at some houses and ask for food, to urinate on a few porches, and generally to make a fool of himself. On Saturday night came the initiation proper. The scut was prepared by reporting to the cellar in his underwear and having dirt and flour smeared all over his body. He was finally cleaned up and brought to the initiation room, where a solemn ceremony followed, ending with the longed-for words `` Let him have light, '' at which point his blindfold was removed, some oaths were administered, and the boy was finally a member....
Shortly after 1915 the present [A.U.V.] house was constructed. From then until the Society crisis of the 1940s, A.U.V. continued strong and successful. There were, to be sure, some problems. In the mid-1920s, the scholarship average of the Society dropped abysmally. The members had also been pledging students illegally--without the approval of the Faculty guardian. In one initiation a boy had been so battered that he was unable to run in the Andover-Exeter track meet.... Yet the Society managed to overcome these problems and well deserved its position as one of the big three among the school's Societies....@s1@s9

From all available evidence, at Andover prep George Bush was completely obsessed with status, with seeming to be important. His 1980 campaign biography boasts that he achieved this goal:

`` There was, as there always is at any institution, an elitism in terms of the group that ran things, the power group among the boys who recognized each other as peers. George was among this group, but for him it was natural.... ''@s2@s0

The A.U.V. roster, 32 members including George Bush, is given in the Andover Class of 1942 yearbook. Why was it `` natural '' for George to be `` among this group ''?
The hierarchical top banana of the A.U.V. in George's class was Godfrey Anderson (`` Rocky '') Rockefeller. In the yearbook just above the A.U.V. roster is a photograph of `` Rocky Rockefeller '' and `` Lem [Lehman F.] Beardsley ''; Rockefeller stands imperiously without a shirt, Beardsley scowls from behind sunglasses. Certainly the real monarch of George Bush's Andover secret society, and George's sponsor, was this Rocky's father, Godfrey S. Rockefeller.
The latter gentleman had been on the staff of the Yale University establishment in China in 1921-22. Yale and the Rockefellers were breeding a grotesque communist insurgency with British Empire ideology; another Yale staffer there was Mao Zedong, later the communist dictator and mass murderer. While he was over in China, Papa Godfrey's cousin Isabel had been the bridesmaid at the wedding of George Bush's parents. His Uncle Percy had co-founded the Harriman bank with George Walker, and backed George Bush's father in several Nazi German enterprises. His grandfather had been the founding treasurer of the Standard Oil Company, and had made the Harrimans (and thus, ultimately, George Bush) rich.
Faculty adviser to A.U.V. in those days was Norwood Penrose Hallowell; his father by the same name was chairman of Lee, Higginson & Co. private bankers, the chief financiers of Boston's extreme racialist political movements. The elder Hallowell was based in London throughout the 1930s, on intimate terms with Montagu Norman and his pro-Hitler American banking friends.
But this kind of backing, by itself, cannot ensure that a person will rise to the top, to authentic `` big-shot '' status. You have to want it very, very badly.
One of Poppy Bush's teachers at Andover, now in retirement, offered to an interviewer for this book, a striking picture of his former pupil. How was the President as a student?
`` He never said a word in class. He was bored to death. And other teachers told me Bush was the worst English student ever in the school. ''

But was this teenager simply slow, or dull? On the contrary.

Nói cách khác, Ông Paul Craig Roberts, một tiến sĩ kinh tế, giảng sư, bỉnh bút, và nhất là từng giữ chức vụ quan trọng hàng đầu trong chính sách kinh tế thời Reagan, đã nhận định rõ rằng nước Mỹ hiện nay đúng là một hệ thống, hay thể chế, tùy cách nhìn, TẬP ĐOÀN LỢI NHUẬN CHUYÊN CHẾ- trong đó định chế chính trị, nhà nước chỉ là công cụ, và cái gọi là "dân chủ gián tiếp", với những cuộc vận động và bầu cử náo nhiệt tốn phí, chỉ là một sân khấu diễn trò cho quần chúng mát dạ an tâm!

Công an , an ninh, quân đội là công cụ do thám rình mò, trộm cắp và .. đàn áp dân khủng bố dân... khi cần đến để bảo vệ hệ thống và đặc lợi.

Theo thiển kiến của Tôi,  Paul Craig Roberts đúng hết tất cả.. vì nó rõ ràng với chứng cớ nhãn tiền. Nhưng chưa đủ! Còn thiếu! Ông ngừng lại ở một ngõ quặt cực kỳ quan trọng, khiến người đọc nghĩ rằng ngoài nước Mỹ, các nơi khác KHÁ HƠN, nhất là đâu đó có một nền dân chủ với nhà nước tận thiện hơn Mỹ!!!

Tại sao PCR chưa công khai nói thẳng rằng bản chất hệ thống nhà nước là như vậy? Quyền chính hiện hữu, thì phải có "thị trường quyền chính", cũng như có sản phẩm dịch vụ tất có thị trường sản xuất và tiêu thụ! Nhất là cái sản phẩm ảo là "an ninh quốc gia" "an toàn xã hội" được một nhà máy ảo "nhà nuốc" sản xuất!

Ngay cả Thụy Sĩ, hiện đang có nền dân chủ trực tiếp, nhưng cũng đang bị sói mòn, khi định chế nhà nước an ninh quốc gia còn đó.. nó nhân danh và bào mòn tính dân chủ chủ quyền thật sự của người dân!

Chúng ta lấy hai thể chế "đối nghịch nhau"Mỹ dt Tầu"- (USA vs CHINA) theo định nghĩa và cẩn trọng xét xem, nó đối nghịch hay đồng bộ hoạt động trong cùng nguyên tắc?

Đảng CSTQ, với Quốc Hội và các tay đại tập đoàn tư bản đỏ, có khác gì lưỡng đảng Mỹ và nhóm phố Wall!

Và hãy nhìn TOÀN BỘ THẾ GIỚI này xem. Toàn bộ 7 tì nhân mạng, không chỉ tổng quát đời sống hạnh phúc tương lai, mà ngay từ cái hành xử nhỏ nhặt, ăn ở tương tác mua sắm, dạy con v.v nhất nhất đều bị một lũ thiểu số điểu khiển và quyết định.

Nếu ngày mai chúng cùng TUYÊN CHIẾN, là tất cả chúng ta, bỗng nhiên không còn là bạn bè, đồng loại với nhau nữa, đều phải coi nhau là kẻ thù, và phải cắm đầu đi giết nhau!
Nếu chúng tuyên bố khóa cửa cảng quan- vì an ninh đất nước, chúng ta bị khóa chân không còn đi thăm viếng nhau du lịch nhìm ngắm phong cảnh địa cầu của chúng ta được nữa!
Nếu chúng bảo vì phát triển bền vững, nó bảo chỉ được ở loại nhà kiểu này, cách nọ v.v Tất cả chúng ta cứ thế cắm đầu tuân thủ... Như đã từng tuân thủ khi nó tuyên bố chỉ được  lấy vợ lấy chồng yêu thương theo tiêu chuẩn chỉ định đặt ra của chúng nó; và phải tin vào một loại Chúa Trời hay Thượng Đế do chúng vẽ ra và qui định!!!

Ngày hôm nay, chúng đang thực hiện kế hoạch lớn hơn, tinh vi hơn.. Chúng đang làm "luật" chỉ định cho chúng ta ở thế nào; ăn những thứ gì; ra sao; nuôi con dạy con cách nào; mua bán, trao đổi tương tác với đồng loại qua trung gian của chúng và do chúng qui định  v.v

Nó nhuần nhuyễn khéo léo đến độ nếu không có một cớ sự xảy ra cho bản thân, chúng ta không mấy ai nhận ra guồng máy cai trị đang xiết chặt dần này!

Và người dân chúng ta, nếu không thức tỉnh sớm, tất cả sẽ thành thói quen và mất hẳn ý chí đối kháng.

Ông Paul Craig Roberts nhìn ra hết, nhưng chưa thấy cái đáy nằm thật sâu. Hay đúng ra là cái nắp vung to lớn phủ rất cao, khiến ông không có giải pháp cho những vấn nạn ông vạch ra! Vì nếu ông thấy, giải pháp chắc chắn sẽ phải là vô hiệu hóa quyền chính, một nền tảng mà ông và nhiều người vẫn tin lá còn hữu ích cần thiết, dù hàng chục ngàn năm qua cho đến hiện tại, nó đã chứng minh ngược lại!

Nó giống như tình trạng tôn giáo! Hàng ngàn năm qua, tôn giáo đã và đang gây đau khổ trì trệ cho xã hội con người... Thế nhưng không chỉ đám dân ngu ngơ, mà ngay các "chuyên gia xã hội học" vẩn cứ ra rả rằng loài người cần "tôn giáo" và chỉ nên "cải cách" tôn giáo chứ không nên loại bỏ!!! Trong khi chính một "lãnh đạo tôn giáo" là Dalai Lama cũng đã khẳng định:

“Chúng ta có thể sống mà không cần tôn giáo và tĩnh tâm, nhưng chúng ta không thể tồn tại mà không có sự chăm sóc yêu thương của con người"- (We can live without religion and meditation, but we cannot survive without human affection- Dalai Lama thứ 14-(1935)

Về chính trị và định chế nhà nước, cũng đã không biết bao nhiêu cựu quan chức chính trị gia, tư tưởng, đặc biệt khuynh hướng "phi quyền chính" (anarchism) đề ra, minh chứng thuyết giải... cả mấy trăm năm nay rồi. Nhưng nhóm quyền lực truyền thông giáo dục nỗ lực gạt bỏ khỏi trao đổi thông tin quần chúng.

Ông Paul Craig Roberts có nhìn ra cái nền tảng băng hoại của nước Mỹ, hay của bất cứ "quốc gia" nào hay không?

If you require more evidence that the United States is a dysfunctional society, observe American elections. Election season is slander season. Each party’s attack teams focus on misrepresenting, defaming, and ridiculing the opposing party’s candidates. Attack ads have replaced debates and any discussion of what the issues are, or should be, and how candidates perceive the public’s interest. Each attack team tells lies designed to enrage various voters about the other team’s candidate.
Whoever is elected is indebted not to voters but to the special interests that provided the campaign money. Once elected the official serves the private interest groups that put the official in office. In America the government can be bought and sold just like everything else. In its Citizens United ruling, a Republican Supreme Court put its stamp of approval on the right of corporations to purchase the US government.
Each state has its own dominant interest groups that win every election. In Florida real estate developers routinely defeat the environment and local communities. Developers have even been known to form organizations that pose as conservation supporters in order to misrepresent and defeat conservation measures.
Yet, despite their long string of losses to special interests, voters still participate in elections. I once read a theory that elections are a form of entertainment. Perhaps the lighter moment of a young woman’s interest in the president’s underwear should be cherished. The Clinton years will be remembered as scandal after scandal with dark events unresolved and covered up. The Clinton years were transformative. For those who don’t remember and those too young at the time to be aware, Ambrose Evans-Pritchard’s book, The Secret Life of Bill Clinton: The Unreported Stories (1997), will be an eye-opener. Perhaps the Democrats should read the book before nominating Hillary as the party’s presidential candidate.
Evans-Pritchard was Washington bureau chief for the Sunday Telegraph, one of the main British newspapers. He was stunned by how the American media ceased to function during the Clinton years. The Clinton years gave us such events as the federal government’s murder of the Branch Davidians in their Waco compound and subsequent coverup, the Oklahoma City bombing and coverup, and the coverup of the apparent murder of White House counsel Vincent Foster.
Almost everyone who paid attention saw coverups, not investigations, of these extraordinary events. Evans-Pritchard was one who payed attention, and what he saw did not pass muster. Yet, there was no press asking questions.
For example, the official story was that Tim McVeigh was the “lone nut” responsible for blowing up the Murrah Federal Office Building with a truck bomb. Yet, at McVeigh’s trial the prosecution did not call a single witness who could place McVeigh in Oklahoma City on the day of the bombing. “This is a rather astonishing fact,” writes Evans-Pritchard, and indeed it is. The reason the prosecution could not provide a witness to place MvVeigh at the scene of the crime is that the many witnesses all reported seeing McVeigh in the company of other men, and the prearranged official story was that McVeigh was alone. The FBI and the prosecution had to make this case, not conduct a real investigation and discover what really happened.
Experts who have examined the Oklahoma City bombing have concluded that the truck bomb was cover for explosives set inside the building. For example, US Air Force munitions expert General Benton K. Partin provided an extensive and detailed study and wrote to the US Senate: “The attached report contains conclusive proof that the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was not caused solely by the truck bomb. Miquel Rodriguez, the associate independent counsel assigned the investigation of Deputy White House Counsel Vincent Foster’s mysterious death resigned after four months convinced that he was dealing with a FBI coverup and that his investigation was being sabotaged by personnel within his own office. The FBI’s official story differed completely from the story of the witness who discovered Foster’s body. Again, as in Oklahoma, the FBI’s case required the creation of a make-believe scenario at odds with the evidence. With no interference from a silent press, the FBI created the story that was needed. Evans-Pritchard wrote that the Foster case was “taboo for American journalists. In private, many concede that the official story is unbelievable, but they will not broach it in print.”
When Americans think of Clinton era scandals, they recall “Whitewater” and Clinton’s sexual escapades with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Evans-Pritchard writes that these two scandals were small potatoes compared to the Waco, Oklahoma City, and Vincent Foster coverups. Evans-Pritchard concludes that these minor events were used by the press to distract the public and perhaps Congress from inquiring into FBI coverups of criminal acts.
I remember asking my Wall Street Journal colleague Robert Bartley why he put so much energy and editorial ink into Whitewater, a minor scandal involving some real estate payoffs to the Clintons that did not pan out. Serious events were ignored while Clinton’s affair with Lewinsky became a matter of impeachment.

Across America, law enforcement officers — from federal agents to state troopers right down to sheriffs in one-street backwaters — are operating a vast, co-ordinated scheme to grab as much of the public’s cash as they can; “hand over fist,” to use the words of one police trainer.

Basically, if you happen to be transporting any (attractive enough) amount of cash, Police feel empowered (and are encouraged) to seize the money from you - without any evidence of any crime having been committed.

Seizing suspected drug money has been legal here for decades, but after 9/11 police acquired a whole new set of powers and justifications. And they set about using them for profit. The Washington Post this week reported that in the past 13 years, there have been 61,998 cash seizures on roadways and elsewhere without use of search warrants. The total haul: $2.5 billion, divided pretty much equally between the U.S. government and state and local authorities (hence the Kafkaesque “equitable sharing” euphemism).

Under the guise of the "War on Drugs" and the "War on Terror" police, it seems, are acting as Road Pirates...pilfering cash from unsuspecting citizens for their bosses - and in all likelihood pocketing portions for themselves.

Some, no doubt, were indeed drug dealers or money launderers and just walked away from the money. Others just couldn’t spare the expense and time of going to court. Of those who did, though, nearly half got their money back, a statistic that fairly screams about the legitimacy of the seizures. So does another fact: In many cases, authorities offer half the money back – money they’d claimed was proceeds of crime. And when they do issue a cheque, they almost always insist their victim sign a legal release promising never to sue.

As the title of the article suggests, this is nothing more than an organized shakedown...let's just call it what it is - organized crime.

Police forces use the money to finance their departmental budgets, sometimes spending it on luxury vehicles, first-class tickets to conferences, and lavish quarters. They regard the money as rightfully theirs. One prosecutor used seized cash to defend herself against a lawsuit brought by people whose cash she seized.

This one is my personal favourite. Steal people's money, using the veil of "justice" as your cover, them beat the victims over the head with their own cash when they fight to get it back.

Chưa hết, hiện nay chúng còn bảo là Ngài và ISIL cũng có luôn cái vũ khí sinh hóa EBOLA của Mỹ khổ cực chịu tai tiếng chế tạo thử nghiệm nơi xứ tây Phi hàng chục năm qua cơ đấy! Và Ngài sẽ dùng vào việc giết hết đám Hồi giáo Ả Rập không theo đúng tiêu chuẩn Sharia của ngài! Thế là trăm dâu sẽ đổ đầu tằm. ISIS May Be Weaponizing Ebola, Spanish Government Warns

As RT reports, Martinez notes a close eye is being kept on online chat rooms, where such attacks are reportedly discussed among jihadist groups where “The use of Ebola as a poisonous weapon against the United States” was the topic of conversation. So far US Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson denied these allegations citing "no specific credible intelligence."

ISIS Leader in Iraq was Released from U.S. Detention Camp in 2009

The leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS,) Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was formerly held by the U.S. military at Camp Bucca in southern Iraq from 2005 to his release in 2009.
Why such a dangerous man was slated for release in 2009, or who made the decision is not known. The Telegraph offers that "one possible explanation is that he was one of thousands of suspected insurgents granted amnesty as the US began its draw down in Iraq."
In 2010, shortly after his release, al-Baghdadi was announced as a new al-Qaeda leader. When bin Laden was killed in 2011, Baghdadi pledged to revenge his death "with 100 terrorist attacks across Iraq" - but with al Qaeda leaders dropping like flies in Pakistan and Afghanistan, no one took him seriously.
But today, Baghdadi has instituted routine car bombings in Iraq and the death toll is now up over 1,000 per month.
This week, his forces seized control of government buildings in Mosul and are marching south to the capital, Baghdad. His forces have planted the black jihadi flag on towns from Fallujah to Ramadi, sites of previous U.S. victories.
So who is he?
The Telegraph reveals:

As with many of al-Qaeda's leaders, precise details are sketchy. His FBI rap sheet offers little beyond the fact that he is aged around 42, and was born as Ibrahim Ali al-Badri in the city of Samarrah...
"This guy was a Salafi (a follower of a fundamentalist brand of Islam), and Saddam's regime would have kept a close eye on him," said Dr Michael Knights, an Iraq expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
"He was also in Camp Bucca for several years, which suggests he was already considered a serious threat when he went in there."
That theory seems backed by US intelligence reports from 2005, which describe him as al-Qaeda's point man in Qaim, a fly-blown town in Iraq's western desert.
"Abu Duaa [an alias] was connected to the intimidation, torture and murder of local civilians in Qaim," says a Pentagon document. "He would kidnap individuals or entire families, accuse them, pronounce sentence and then publicly execute them."

The details are emerging of a new secret and quite stupid Saudi-US deal on Syria and the so-called IS. It involves oil and gas control of the entire region and the weakening of Russia and Iran by Saudi Arabian flooding the world market with cheap oil. Details were concluded in the September meeting by US Secretary of State John Kerry and the Saudi King. The unintended consequence will be to push Russia even faster to turn east to China and Eurasia.
One of the weirdest anomalies of the recent NATO bombing campaign, allegedly against the ISIS or IS or ISIL or Daash, depending on your preference, is the fact that with major war raging in the world’s richest oil region, the price of crude oil has been dropping, dramatically so. Since June when ISIS suddenly captured the oil-rich region of Iraq around Mosul and Kirkuk, the benchmark Brent price of crude oil dropped some 20% from $112 to about $88. World daily demand for oil has not dropped by 20% however. China oil demand has not fallen 20% nor has US domestic shale oil stock risen by 21%.
What has happened is that the long-time US ally inside OPEC, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has been flooding the market with deep discounted oil, triggering a price war within OPEC, with Iran following suit and panic selling short in oil futures markets. The Saudis are targeting sales to Asia for the discounts and in particular, its major Asian customer, China where it is reportedly offering its crude for a mere $50 to $60 a barrel rather than the earlier price of around $100. [1] That Saudi financial discounting operation in turn is by all appearance being coordinated with a US Treasury financial warfare operation, via its Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, in cooperation with a handful of inside players on Wall Street who control oil derivatives trading. The result is a market panic that is gaining momentum daily. China is quite happy to buy the cheap oil, but her close allies, Russia and Iran, are being hit severely.

According to Rashid Abanmy, President of the Riyadh-based Saudi Arabia Oil Policies and Strategic Expectations Center, the dramatic price collapse is being deliberately caused by the Saudis, OPEC’s largest producer. The public reason claimed is to gain new markets in a global market of weakening oil demand. The real reason, according to Abanmy, is to put pressure on Iran on her nuclear program, and on Russia to end her support for Bashar al-Assad in Syria.[2]
When combined with the financial losses of Russian state natural gas sales to Ukraine and prospects of a US-instigated cutoff of the transit of Russian gas to the huge EU market this winter as EU stockpiles become low, the pressure on oil prices hits Moscow doubly. More than 50% of Russian state revenue comes from its export sales of oil and gas.
The US-Saudi oil price manipulation is aimed at destabilizing several strong opponents of US globalist policies. Targets include Iran and Syria, both allies of Russia in opposing a US sole Superpower. The principal target, however, is Putin’s Russia, the single greatest threat today to that Superpower hegemony. The strategy is similar to what the US did with Saudi Arabia in 1986 when they flooded the world with Saudi oil, collapsing the price to below $10 a barrel and destroying the economy of then-Soviet ally, Saddam Hussein in Iraq and, ultimately, of the Soviet economy, paving the way for the fall of the Soviet Union. Today, the hope is that a collapse of Russian oil revenues, combined with select pin-prick sanctions designed by the US Treasury’s Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence will dramatically weaken Putin’s enormous domestic support and create conditions for his ultimate overthrow. It is doomed to fail for many reasons, not the least, because Putin’s Russia has taken major strategic steps together with China and other nations to lessen its dependence on the West. In fact the oil weapon is accelerating recent Russian moves to focus its economic power on national interests and lessen dependence on the Dollar system. If the dollar ceases being the currency of world trade, especially oil trade, the US Treasury faces financial catastrophe. For this reason, I call the Kerry-Abdullah oil war a very stupid tactic.
The Kerry-Abdullah secret deal
On September 11, US Secretary of State Kerry met Saudi King Abdullah at his palace on the Red Sea. The King invited former head of Saudi intelligence, Prince Bandar to attend. There a deal was hammered out which saw Saudi support for the Syrian airstrikes against ISIS on condition Washington backed the Saudis in toppling Assad, a firm ally of Russia and de facto of Iran and an obstacle to Saudi and UAE plans to control the emerging EU natural gas market and destroy Russia’s lucrative EU trade. A report in the Wall Street Journal noted there had been “months of behind-the-scenes work by the US and Arab leaders, who agreed on the need to cooperate against Islamic State, but not how or when. The process gave the Saudis leverage to extract a fresh US commitment to beef up training for rebels fighting Mr. Assad, whose demise the Saudis still see as a top priority.” [3]
For the Saudis the war is between two competing age-old vectors of Islam. Saudi Arabia, home to the sacred cities of Mecca and Medina, claims de facto supremacy in the Islamic world of Sunni Islam. The Saudi Sunni form is ultra-conservative Wahhabism, named for an 18^th Century Bedouin Islamic fundamentalist or Salafist named Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahha. The Taliban derive from Wahhabism with the aid of Saudi-financed religious instruction. The Gulf Emirates and Kuwait also adhere to the Sunni Wahhabism of the Saudis, as does the Emir of Qatar. Iran on the other hand historically is the heart of the smaller branch of Islam, the Shi’ite. Iraq’s population is some 61% majority Shi’ite. Syria’s President, Bashar al-Assad is a member of a satellite of the Shi’ite branch known as Alawite. Some 23% of Turkey is also Alawite Muslim. To complicate the picture more, across a bridge from Saudi Arabia sits the tiny island country, Bahrain where as many as 75% of the population is Shi’ite but the ruling Al-Khalifa family is Sunni and firmly tied to Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the richest Saudi oil region is dominated by Shi’ite Muslims who work the oil installations of Ras Tanura.
An oil and gas pipeline war
These historic fault lines inside Islam which lay dormant, were brought into a state of open warfare with the launching of the US State Department and CIA’s Islamic Holy War, otherwise known as the Arab Spring. Washington neo-conservatives embedded inside the Obama Administration in a form of “Deep State” secret network, and their allied media such as the Washington Post, advocated US covert backing of a pet CIA project known as the Muslim Brotherhood. As I detail in my most recent book, Amerikas’ Heiliger Krieg, the CIA had cultivated ties to the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood death cult since the early 1950’s.
Now if we map the resources of known natural gas reserves in the entire Persian Gulf region, the motives of the Saudi-led Qatar and UAE in financing with billions of dollars the opposition to Assad, including the Sunni ISIS, becomes clearer. Natural gas has become the favored “clean energy” source for the 21^st Century and the EU is the world’s largest growth market for gas, a major reason Washington wants to break the Gazprom-EU supply dependency to weaken Russia and keep control over the EU via loyal proxies like Qatar.
The world’s largest known natural gas reservoir sits in the middle of the Persian Gulf straddling part in the territorial waters of Qatar and part in Iran. The Iranian part is called North Pars. In 2006 China’s state-owned CNOOC signed an agreement with Iran to develop North Pars and build LNG infrastructure to bring the gas to China.[4]
The Qatar side of the Persian Gulf, called North Field, contains the world’s third largest known natural gas reserves behind Russia and Iran.
In July 2011, the governments of Syria, Iran and Iraq signed an historic gas pipeline energy agreement which went largely unnoticed in the midst of the NATO-Saudi-Qatari war to remove Assad. The pipeline, envisioned to cost $10 billion and take three years to complete, would run from the Iranian Port Assalouyeh near the South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf, to Damascus in Syria via Iraq territory. The agreement would make Syria the center of assembly and production in conjunction with the reserves of Lebanon. This is a geopolitically strategic space that geographically opens for the first time, extending from Iran to Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.[5] As Asia Times correspondent Pepe Escobar put it, “The Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline – if it’s ever built – would solidify a predominantly Shi’ite axis through an economic, steel umbilical cord.”[6]
Shortly after signing with Iran and Iraq, on August 16, 2011, Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian Ministry of Oil announced the discovery of a gas well in the Area of Qarah in the Central Region of Syria near Homs. Gazprom, with Assad in power, would be a major investor or operator of the new gas fields in Syria. [7] Iran ultimately plans to extend the pipeline from Damascus to Lebanon’s Mediterranean port where it would be delivered to the huge EU market. Syria would buy Iranian gas along with a current Iraqi agreement to buy Iranian gas from Iran’s part of South Pars field.[8]
Qatar, today the world’s largest exporter of LNG, largely to Asia, wants the same EU market that Iran and Syria eye. For that, they would build pipelines to the Mediterranean. Here is where getting rid of the pro-Iran Assad is essential. In 2009 Qatar approached Bashar al-Assad to propose construction of a gas pipeline from Qatar’s north Field through Syria on to Turkey and to the EU. Assad refused, citing Syria’s long friendly relations with Russia and Gazprom. That refusal combined with the Iran-Iraq-Syria gas pipeline agreement in 2011 ignited the full-scale Saudi and Qatari assault on Assad’s power, financing al Qaeda terrorists, recruits of Jihadist fanatics willing to kill Alawite and Shi’ite “infidels” for $100 a month and a Kalishnikov. The Washington neo-conservative warhawks in and around the Obama White House, along with their allies in the right-wing Netanyahu government, were cheering from the bleachers as Syria went up in flames after spring 2011.
Today the US-backed wars in Ukraine and in Syria are but two fronts in the same strategic war to cripple Russia and China and to rupture any Eurasian counter-pole to a US-controlled New World Order. In each, control of energy pipelines, this time primarily of natural gas pipelines—from Russia to the EU via Ukraine and from Iran and Syria to the EU via Syria—is the strategic goal. The true aim of the US and Israel backed ISIS is to give the pretext for bombing Assad’s vital grain silos and oil refineries to cripple the economy in preparation for a “Ghaddafi-”style elimination of Russia and China and Iran-ally Bashar al-Assad.
In a narrow sense, as Washington neo-conservatives see it, who controls Syria could control the Middle East. And from Syria, gateway to Asia, he will hold the key to Russia House, as well as that of China via the Silk Road.
Religious wars have historically been the most savage of all wars and this one is no exception, especially when trillions of dollars in oil and gas revenues are at stake. Why is the secret Kerry-Abdullah deal on Syria reached on September 11 stupid? Because the brilliant tacticians in Washington and Riyadh and Doha and to an extent in Ankara are unable to look at the interconnectedness of all the dis-order and destruction they foment, to look beyond their visions of control of the oil and gas flows as the basis of their illegitimate power. They are planting the seeds of their own destruction in the end.
